Job Overview:

Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a skilled and dedicated Health & Safety Advisor to join the Health, Safety, Fire & Security Team. This exciting role will involve working across all sites of Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, providing expert advice on health and safety issues related to NHS Fire Code standards and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HSWA).

In this position, you will play a critical role in safeguarding the well-being of staff, patients, and visitors. Your expertise will help develop health and safety policies, conduct audits, and provide training to ensure compliance with the latest safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities

As the Health & Safety Advisor, your primary responsibilities will include:

Health & Safety Audits & Compliance

  • Conduct regular health and safety audits across all Trust sites, ensuring the implementation of safe systems of work.

  • Write and develop comprehensive health and safety policies, ensuring all areas are compliant with the latest legislation and NHS standards.

  • Carry out accident and incident investigations, identifying root causes and implementing measures to prevent future occurrences.

  • Provide expert health and safety advice to staff at all levels, including senior management, to ensure adherence to safety standards and regulations.

Training & Development

  • Develop and deliver Health and Safety training programs, including face-to-face, e-learning, and risk assessment training sessions.

  • Ensure the Trust’s staff are well-informed and fully compliant with all relevant safety legislation, such as the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

  • Create a training strategy that aligns with the Trust’s Training Needs Analysis.

Health and Safety Policy Development

  • Lead the formulation of health and safety policies that support the Trust’s operational activities.

  • Work alongside senior management to develop short- and long-term health and safety objectives and strategies.

  • Ensure effective communication of health and safety policies and procedures to all Trust staff.

Accident & Incident Investigations

  • Undertake thorough investigations into accidents and incidents, providing reports that assist in claim denial or swift settlement of claims.

  • Report incidents to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and ensure compliance with RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations).

Management of Resources

  • Take responsibility for the allocation and expenditure of capital monies assigned to improving health and safety practices and reducing risk factors, such as ligature risks.

  • Oversee the management of health and safety resources, ensuring their effective utilization.

Leadership & Staff Engagement

  • Support the Head of Health, Safety, Fire, and Security in leading the Trust in promoting a positive health and safety culture.

  • Foster effective leadership and communication across all departments to ensure safety is a priority at every level.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications:

  • Degree in Occupational Safety & Health or NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Safety & Health (or equivalent).

  • Chartered Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) or the ability to obtain this status.

  • Proven record of continued professional development and expertise in health and safety management.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Audit qualification in ISO or related audit/monitoring experience.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Practical experience with Health and Safety Management Systems and accident prevention techniques.

  • In-depth knowledge of Health and Safety legislation, particularly the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and related NHS regulations.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities efficiently.

  • Ability to communicate and influence at all levels of the organization, including senior management.

  • Strong presentation skills for delivering training to diverse groups.

Essential Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in health and safety policy formulation and implementation.

  • Experience with incident investigations, including producing detailed reports and identifying risk reduction strategies.

  • Experience of delivering training programs related to health and safety and evaluating their effectiveness.

  • Ability to work on own initiative with a proactive, solution-oriented mindset.

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience in chairing meetings and representing an organization in health and safety-related discussions with external agencies such as HSE, CQC, and local authorities.
