Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Data Engineer at Cambridge University Press & Assessment, you will be responsible for:

Leading Data Engineering Teams

  • Oversee a team of data engineers to develop high-performance, scalable data pipelines.

  • Lead the architecture and development of data infrastructure that supports machine learning models and analytics for AI-driven educational products.

Optimising Data Infrastructure

  • Architect, implement, and optimise cloud-based data storage and compute solutions.

  • Introduce new data technologies and frameworks to improve system scalability and efficiency.

Ensuring Data Governance and Best Practices

  • Establish and enforce data governance and best practices to ensure data integrity and security across systems.

  • Develop monitoring solutions to track system performance and reliability.

Collaboration with AI and ML Teams

  • Work closely with data scientists and ML engineers to ensure that data pipelines align with machine learning model needs.

  • Drive the standardisation of data engineering practices across the Applied AI team.

Continuous Improvement and Innovation

  • Evaluate and integrate emerging data technologies, aiming to streamline data workflows and enhance analytics capabilities.

  • Keep pace with industry trends to ensure that the data infrastructure is future-proof and scalable.


Qualifications and Skills

Essential:

  • Educational Background: A degree in computing, engineering, science, or social science with a strong analytical focus.

  • Experience: Minimum 5 years in a data engineering role, with at least 2 years in a senior or lead capacity.

  • Technical Proficiency: Advanced proficiency in SQL, Python, and shell scripting for building robust, testable production-grade code.

  • Data Architecture: Extensive experience in designing and managing large-scale data architectures, including cloud-based data storage solutions.

  • Cloud Computing: Expertise in cloud computing (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and distributed systems.

  • Problem-Solving: Experience in troubleshooting and optimising data pipelines to enhance system performance.

  • Data Governance: Deep understanding of data governance, security policies, and risk management practices in data engineering.

Desirable:

  • Postgraduate Degree: A postgraduate qualification in computing, engineering, or science.

  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Experience with AWS-native tools like CloudFormation, CDK, or Terraform.

  • Orchestration Tools: Experience with orchestration frameworks like Apache Airflow, Prefect, or Dagster.

  • MLOps: Familiarity with supporting ML lifecycle pipelines.

  • Leadership Experience: Proven track record of mentoring or leading engineering teams.
