Job Summary
Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking a dedicated and proactive Senior Assistant CSU Accountant to join our dynamic and high-performing Management Accounting Team. This position will focus on supporting the Leeds Children’s Hospital CSU in achieving sound financial management, while providing essential leadership in financial planning, analysis, and reporting within the NHS.

Key Responsibilities
As the Senior Assistant CSU Accountant, your main duties will include a range of financial responsibilities that contribute to the smooth operation of the Trust’s financial activities. You will:
Financial Planning & Business Cases

Support the Senior CSU Accountant in providing financial advice and assistance to business units within the Trust, including budget development, planning, and expenditure reviews.

Help develop business cases for service changes, ensuring financial sustainability and compliance with Trust guidelines.

Aid in the creation of annual and long-term financial plans, ensuring alignment with the Trust’s objectives.
Performance Reporting & Management

Provide accurate and timely financial reports for business units, including financial analysis and non-financial indicators.

Help monitor and report the results of actions taken by managers and clinicians, ensuring that savings targets and financial performance goals are met.

Assist in the delivery of sustainable performance improvements, supporting management teams to better understand and manage financial performance.
Budgeting & Financial Control

Set and manage budgets for departments, ensuring that financial plans are adhered to, and targets are met.

Regularly review expenditure, income, and activity plans, ensuring alignment with the Trust’s financial strategies.

Ensure that financial controls and policies are met at all times, providing robust advice on managing financial risks and performance.
Human Resources & Training

Train and support junior finance staff within the team, ensuring they have the knowledge and skills needed to perform their roles effectively.

Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities to improve team performance.
Policy Development & Compliance

Support the development of improved reporting tools for financial performance, making use of available systems like financial ledgers and spreadsheets.

Ensure adherence to NHS financial policies, maintaining high standards of governance and compliance.

Strong financial management and accounting experience within a complex organization.

Person Specification
Qualifications

Essential:

Education equivalent to a postgraduate diploma level in professional accountancy.

5 GCSEs (Grade 4-9 or A*-C), including Maths and English.

Desirable:

Part-qualified status in a recognized accounting body (CCAB or CIMA).

AAT-qualified or equivalent.

Experience

Essential:

Experience in working within financial management and a strong understanding of accounting principles and financial systems.

Proven ability to interpret detailed financial information and perform complex reconciliations.

Experience of working with Microsoft Excel and financial software tools to create bespoke reports.

Substantial experience in management accounting, providing financial advice to senior leaders and departments.
