Job Summary

East Sussex County Council is looking for compassionate and dedicated Support Workers to help adults with learning disabilities achieve greater independence and live their best lives. In this role, you will provide practical support, build meaningful relationships, and enable people to live full and active lives.

No prior care experience is required, but we are looking for individuals with the right values, a positive attitude, and a passion for making a difference. You will receive comprehensive training, including medication, health and safety, safeguarding, and manual handling. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to work towards the Care Certificate to further your career in care.

Key Responsibilities

1. Personal and Practical Support

  • Provide one-on-one support for adults with learning disabilities in various settings, including community activities and supported living environments.

  • Assist individuals with daily living activities such as personal care, meal preparation, and household tasks.

  • Support individuals to develop new skills and encourage independence in daily tasks.

  • Work alongside the team to maintain a safe and supportive environment, ensuring that all individuals’ needs are met.

2. Promoting Independence

  • Support individuals in setting and achieving personal goals, helping them to develop life skills and improve their self-confidence.

  • Encourage participation in social and community activities, helping individuals to build relationships and engage with others.

  • Provide emotional support, fostering positive and respectful relationships with the people you care for.

3. Team Collaboration and Communication

  • Work closely with other team members to deliver high-quality care and support services.

  • Maintain accurate records of support provided and ensure all activities are documented appropriately.

  • Communicate effectively with individuals, their families, and other care professionals to provide the best possible support.

4. Health and Safety Compliance

  • Complete mandatory training in areas such as medication administration, safeguarding, and health and safety.

  • Follow all safety protocols and procedures to ensure the well-being of those you support and your colleagues.

  • Participate in ongoing supervision and development sessions to ensure you have the skills and knowledge needed for the role.


Essential Qualifications and Skills

1. Personal Qualities

  • Positive attitude towards working with people with learning disabilities and supporting them to achieve independence.

  • Compassionate and patient, with the ability to create a safe, respectful, and encouraging environment.

  • Self-motivated with a willingness to learn and develop new skills.

  • Strong communication and organizational skills to handle various tasks and responsibilities.

2. Physical and Practical Abilities

  • Physically capable of performing tasks as required, including personal care and support activities.

  • Willingness to undertake mandatory training, including manual handling and medication administration.

3. Desired Experience

  • No prior care experience necessary; we value the right attitude and commitment to learning.

  • Experience in a care or support role is beneficial but not essential.

  • Willingness to work as part of a team, with a focus on collaboration and mutual support.
