Key Responsibilities of the Senior Project Manager Role
Capital Projects Leadership
- Drive the successful delivery of major capital and infrastructure projects across Addenbrooke’s and Rosie Hospitals.
- Coordinate the entire project lifecycle from concept and design through procurement, construction, and handover.
- Serve as the main point of contact between the Trust and external contractors, design consultants, and statutory authorities.
- Oversee compliance with NHS standards, Health Building Notes (HBNs), Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs), and other healthcare regulations.
Strategic Planning & Oversight
- Work closely with the Capital Projects and Development Manager to develop strategic project roadmaps, set milestones, and allocate resources effectively.
- Lead risk assessments, cost-benefit analyses, and options appraisals to ensure value-for-money project outcomes.
- Contribute to business case development for internal and external funding approvals.
- Interpret technical documentation and ensure design intent aligns with operational requirements and regulatory guidelines.
- Prepare project performance reports and present progress updates to the senior executive team.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Engage with a wide range of internal departments including Estates, Clinical Services, IT, and Infection Control.
- Promote multidisciplinary collaboration to capture clinical and operational input early in the design process.
- Facilitate inclusive workshops and consultations that empower stakeholders and ensure that clinical needs are translated into infrastructure solutions.
- Actively support quality assurance and continuous improvement initiatives throughout project execution.
Ideal Candidate Profile: Skills & Qualifications
Essential Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Project Management, Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related discipline.
- Formal certification in project management methodologies such as PRINCE2, APM, or PMP.
Desirable Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a relevant subject area.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development in healthcare capital projects or infrastructure planning.
Key Competencies
- Demonstrated ability to lead capital construction projects in acute healthcare environments.
- In-depth knowledge of construction procurement methods, contract law, and NHS frameworks.
- Familiarity with the complexities of clinical and non-clinical hospital operations.

- Clear understanding of the NHS Estates Capital Investment Manual and relevant statutory obligations.
Required Experience and Knowledge
Mandatory Experience
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the planning and delivery of capital infrastructure projects, ideally within a healthcare context.
- Successful track record of leading project teams through complex builds, refurbishments, and service decants.
- Knowledge of spatial and functional planning for clinical services.
- Demonstrated experience of managing cost, scope, risk, and quality across multi-million-pound NHS or public sector developments.
Preferred Experience
- Previous involvement with PFI/PPP schemes, hospital reconfigurations, or modular build solutions.
- Familiarity with digital tools for construction project management including BIM, Revit, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Project.
- Experience in Lean or Six Sigma methodologies within healthcare infrastructure planning.

- Strong ability to read and interpret architectural plans, mechanical and electrical schematics, and construction specifications.
- Analytical capability to evaluate project KPIs and performance dashboards.
