Position: Senior Systems Engineer
Location: 100% Remote, Work From Anywhere
Salary: $110,000-$210,000+ USD
Role Overview
As a Senior Systems Engineer at Automattic, you’ll be part of a small, vertically integrated team responsible for a massive setup. This unique opportunity allows you to engage in all aspects of infrastructure management, including:
- Availability & Uptime: Maximize service availability through proactive planning, architectural decisions, automation, and rapid failure response.
- Performance Optimization: Enhance service speed through server-side and client-side optimization, and collaboration with third-party services.
- Security & Integrity: Ensure the safety and security of services through proactive monitoring, enforcement, real-time response, and data integrity/backups for disaster recovery.
- Developer Support: Minimize friction for developers by providing swift answers and support, ensuring they can efficiently ship software.
Responsibilities
- High Availability: Proactively plan and make architectural decisions to maximize service availability and uptime.
- Performance: Optimize server-side and client-side interactions for fast services, collaborating with third-party services as needed.
- Security: Ensure user and employee safety through monitoring, enforcement, real-time response, and data backups.
- Support: Provide immediate answers to developers’ questions, facilitating swift software development and deployment.

Ideal Candidate Profile
You might be a good fit if you have:
- Nginx Expertise: Maintained large Nginx setups with advanced routing, load balancing, and high availability.
- Database Management: Managed extensive MySQL/MariaDB deployments with top-tier performance and data integrity.
- PHP Proficiency: Experienced in running and debugging PHP applications at scale.
- System Understanding: Deep knowledge of lower-level system stacks—filesystems, network, memory management, kernel internals.
- Operational Excellence: Operated and maintained large, complex public-facing web hosting systems.
- Autonomy: Architected, prototyped, and maintained solutions independently.
- Attention to Detail: Strived for operational excellence with meticulous attention to detail.
- Travel Flexibility: Available for 2-3 weeks of post-COVID travel annually to meet teammates in person.
