Key Responsibilities of the Registered Nurse

As a Registered Nurse in the Neuropsychiatry Unit, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality care and supporting the unit’s goals. Your duties will include:

  • Patient Care & Assessment: Conduct patient assessments, develop personalized care plans, and ensure all interventions are evidence-based and patient-centered.

  • Supervision & Mentorship: Supervise and guide junior staff, including healthcare assistants and students. Act as a mentor/assessor for new learners.

  • Team Leadership: Take charge of the ward/department in the absence of the ward manager or senior nurse. Lead the clinical care team and ensure continuity of care.

  • Emergency Response: Respond to emergency situations, ensuring patient safety and well-being, including fire and resuscitation procedures.


Key Qualifications and Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) or Registered Learning Disability Nurse (RNLD) with current NMC registration, or newly qualifying RMNs and RNLDs who are ready to apply their academic knowledge in a clinical setting.

  • Evidence of continuing professional development to demonstrate commitment to the nursing profession.

  • Experience in clinical skills such as IV drug administration, cannulation, and venipuncture is required. Training in ECG and other essential procedures will be provided.

Desirable Criteria

  • Teaching and assessing qualification (e.g., 998 or equivalent) or willingness to undertake this qualification after 2 years post-registration.

  • Experience in a hospital setting as an RMN or RNLD.

  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act and experience in conducting Mental Health Act assessments.
