Overview of the Role

Public Health Wales is looking for an experienced and driven Project Manager to join their Quality, Safety & Improvement Directorate Programme Management Office. This position provides a unique opportunity to contribute to public health improvements, manage high-impact projects, and take the next step in your career in project management.

As a key part of a busy and dynamic PMO team, you’ll oversee complex, high-priority projects that enhance healthcare across Wales. This role is ideal for those with a strong project management background, particularly those familiar with public sector initiatives and healthcare.

Key Responsibilities

As a Project Manager at Public Health Wales, you will:

  • Project Management: Lead the planning, execution, and delivery of projects. Apply your expertise in project management methodologies, such as PRINCE2 or MSP, to ensure all projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.

  • Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement: Work closely with senior project managers, business teams, and external stakeholders to align project goals and ensure effective communication. Build strong relationships with key stakeholders and Project Boards.

  • Process Improvement: Contribute to the continuous improvement of project management practices, providing insights on process optimizations and risk management strategies.

  • Team Support: Support and mentor junior project managers, offering guidance and ensuring the smooth operation of the PMO team.

  • Complex Problem Solving: Use your problem-solving skills to navigate challenges that arise in project delivery, ensuring that all obstacles are resolved in a timely manner.

  • Project Management Expertise: You should have a proven track record in managing successful projects, particularly in public sector environments. Experience with PRINCE2, MSP, or equivalent project management methodologies is essential.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Your ability to develop and maintain relationships with a variety of stakeholders—both internal and external—is crucial to the role.

  • Problem-Solving Abilities: You will be expected to solve complex challenges throughout the life cycle of your projects. Your ability to think strategically and develop practical solutions will be key.

  • Attention to Detail: A meticulous eye for detail is essential for developing and monitoring complex project plans, ensuring the highest standards of accuracy.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

  • Postgraduate Diploma (or equivalent experience) in a relevant subject.

  • A Project Management or Project Management Office qualification (e.g., PRINCE2, MSP, or equivalent).

  • Evidence of continuous professional development.

  • Proven experience in project management and delivering complex projects in the public sector.

Desirable:

  • Master’s level qualification.

  • Experience working within the NHS or a similar healthcare environment.

  • Familiarity with project management software such as Power BI or advanced Excel skills.


Skills and Competencies

Essential Skills:

  • Developing and monitoring complex project plans.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to manage and lead projects independently, with minimal supervision.

  • Problem-solving skills in complex project management scenarios.

  • Proficiency in standard desktop applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

Desirable Skills:

  • Advanced IT skills in desktop applications such as Excel and Power BI.

  • Welsh language skills (Level 1) or a willingness to learn.

Travel Requirements:
This role requires regular travel across Wales, with occasional travel further afield.
