Job Overview

Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust is seeking dedicated Peer Workers to join the Male and Female Secure Inpatient Wards at Roseberry Park Hospital. As part of a transformative mental health support team, you will have the opportunity to use your lived experience to help others facing mental health challenges. Key Responsibilities

As a Peer Worker, your role will primarily involve offering one-on-one peer support and facilitating group sessions, assisting patients on their recovery journey by drawing on your own lived experience. You will contribute directly to team meetings and service development initiatives, ensuring the voices of service users are heard. Below are the key duties:

  • 1:1 Peer Support: Offer empathetic, non-judgmental support to patients, including their families and carers, on the ward.
  • Facilitate Support Groups: Lead or co-lead peer support groups that foster healing through shared experience.
  • Team Integration: Attend and contribute to team meetings, helping to shape treatment plans and incorporate lived experience into care strategies.
  • Service Development: Support the growth and improvement of mental health services by advocating for the inclusion of peer support in all team processes.
  • Connection Building: Establish and maintain relationships with a wide range of professionals, including other peer support workers and mental health providers.

You will also receive continuous professional development, including one-on-one and group supervision, along with ongoing peer connection opportunities.


Ideal Candidate

The Trust is looking for individuals who have personal lived experience of accessing mental health services, especially within inpatient settings. Your ability to connect with others through shared experiences will be invaluable in this role. Below are the essential qualifications and experience required:

Qualifications

  • Essential: AS Level, NVQ Level 3, or equivalent experience providing peer support in a mental health setting.
  • Desirable: Completion of Trust Trauma Informed Peer Support Training (or willingness to complete within the required timeframe).
  • Skills: Strong communication skills and a genuine passion for supporting others through shared lived experiences.

Experience

  • Essential: Experience with mental health challenges, including inpatient services or secure settings such as prisons.
  • Desirable: Prior peer support experience, either paid or voluntary, particularly in mental health care or community services.

Knowledge

  • Essential: Understanding the importance of peer support in mental health recovery, and familiarity with the needs of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
