Job Summary
Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is looking for a Facilities Operative to join our Grounds and Gardens team at Grange University Hospital in Cwmbran. As part of the Facilities and Estates team, you will be responsible for maintaining the hospital grounds, ensuring a clean, safe, and visually appealing environment. This role includes grass and hedge cutting, tree pruning, litter picking, external cleaning, and waste disposal in line with seasonal requirements.

Key Responsibilities
Grounds Maintenance & Landscaping
- Maintain hospital grounds to a high standard, including grass cutting, hedge trimming, and tree pruning.
- Carry out seasonal gardening tasks, such as weeding and plant care, to keep outdoor spaces well-presented.
- Ensure hospital grounds remain litter-free through regular rubbish collection and bin emptying.
External Cleaning & Waste Management
- Perform external cleaning duties to maintain a hygienic environment across hospital premises.
- Manage waste disposal and recycling, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
- Operate mechanical equipment such as lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, and leaf blowers to carry out tasks effectively.
Health & Safety Compliance
- Follow health and safety procedures, including manual handling and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Assist with snow clearance and gritting during severe weather conditions to ensure safe access to hospital facilities.
- Work in partnership with the Facilities and Estates teams to maintain a safe and efficient working environment.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential Requirements:
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills (oral and written).
- Full valid UK Driving Licence (Category B – manual).
- Knowledge of grounds maintenance, waste management, or cleaning procedures gained through training or experience.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in an outdoor environment.
- Good communication skills for interacting with colleagues and hospital staff.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience:
- NVQ Level 2 in Sustainable Waste Management, Horticulture, or Gardening (or equivalent experience).
- Experience working in a large groundskeeping or facilities management role.
- Experience operating mechanical gardening or waste disposal equipment.
- Forklift Truck Operator Licence (or willingness to train).
- Welsh language skills (Levels 1-5) are desirable but not required.
