Key Responsibilities of the Electrical Craftsperson Role

Electrical Maintenance & Compliance

  • Perform statutory electrical maintenance in line with NHS HTM guidelines, Electrical Regulations, ACOPs, and Trust policies.

  • Maintain and repair electrical generators, refrigeration units, air conditioning systems, electrical distribution networks, and air handling plants.

  • Undertake planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance (RM) duties to ensure operational safety and efficiency.

Service Coordination and Teamwork

  • Act as the primary electrical craftsperson within the in-house maintenance team.

  • Coordinate with electrical contractors and Estates management to deliver seamless service across the Trust’s facilities, including Mile End Hospital and Royal London Hospital.

  • Work under the guidance of the Senior Electrical Craftsperson and Estates Supervisor to prioritize and execute maintenance schedules.

Emergency Response and On-Call Duties

  • Participate in the Estates emergency on-call rota, covering out-of-hours electrical maintenance and urgent repairs across all Barts Health Trust sites.

  • Respond promptly to reactive maintenance requests ensuring minimal disruption to hospital operations and patient care.

Compliance and Health & Safety

  • Act as a Competent Person (CP) in line with relevant NHS HTM electrical safety guidance.

  • Maintain thorough documentation of all maintenance and repairs to meet statutory and internal audit requirements.

  • Adhere to health and safety legislation, promoting a safe working environment at all times.


Essential Qualifications and Experience

Qualifications

  • Recognized mechanical or building services apprenticeship, City & Guilds or NVQ Level 2/3 equivalent.

  • Qualified with City & Guilds 18th Edition electrical certification, meeting Electrical Safety Code requirements for Competent Person (CP) status.

Experience

  • Proven experience working independently and as part of a maintenance team in a complex building services environment.

  • Demonstrable skills in following engineering and electrical schematics accurately.

  • Experience with planned and reactive maintenance of electrical systems.

  • Knowledge of healthcare or commercial electrical building services is highly advantageous.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • City & Guilds 2391 Level 3 certification in Inspection, Testing, and Certification of Electrical Installations.

  • Experience leading or working closely with electrical contractors and teams to achieve maintenance goals.

  • Familiarity with hospital-specific electrical equipment and systems.


Critical Skills and Knowledge Areas

  • Comprehensive understanding of Health & Safety principles applicable to electrical engineering and building systems.

  • Detailed knowledge of NHS HTM 06.01 and HTM 06.02 electrical maintenance standards.

  • Strong familiarity with building materials and construction methods relevant to electrical systems.

  • Experience using computerized maintenance management systems such as Concept CAFM for activity tracking (desirable).
