Key Responsibilities of the Deputy Headteacher

As Deputy Headteacher, you will play a vital role in the strategic leadership and operational management of the school. Your focus will be on ensuring the best outcomes for all students and supporting the Headteacher in the effective running of the school.

1. Strategic Leadership and Vision

  • Work closely with the Headteacher to develop and communicate a clear vision for the school.

  • Champion and promote Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in all areas of school life.

  • Lead initiatives to improve outcomes across all key stages, focusing on both academic excellence and personal development.

2. Teaching Excellence and Curriculum Development

  • Maintain high standards of teaching across the 11-18 age range.

  • Develop a broad, balanced, and coherent curriculum that meets the diverse needs of all students.

  • Promote the sharing of best practices across departments to enhance the teaching and learning experience.

3. Inclusion and Vulnerable Student Support

  • Lead the strategic direction of inclusion across the school, ensuring that all students, particularly vulnerable, disadvantaged, and underachieving groups, have access to the support they need to succeed.

  • Implement and monitor effective interventions for students requiring additional support, ensuring that no student is left behind.

4. Staff Leadership and Development

  • Line manage Assistant Headteachers and other key staff, providing guidance and support for their professional growth.

  • Foster a culture of continuous development by identifying training needs and organizing staff training and development activities.

  • Work closely with the Headteacher and Governors on staff recruitment and retention to ensure a high-quality, motivated teaching team.

5. School Improvement and Self-Review

  • Lead the rigorous self-review of key areas within the school to ensure continuous improvement.

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the School Improvement Plan, setting clear goals for progress.

  • Oversee the quality of provision in linked departments and year groups, ensuring that regular reviews identify strengths and areas for development.

6. Safeguarding and Student Wellbeing

  • Ensure that the school adheres to the highest standards of safeguarding practices and meets all statutory safeguarding requirements.

  • Promote a safe, calm, and well-ordered environment where students feel supported in their learning and personal development.

7. Operational Management

  • Support the Headteacher in managing the day-to-day running of the school and take responsibility for deputizing in their absence.

  • Handle urgent issues and emergencies promptly, ensuring minimal disruption to students and staff.

  • Contribute to the effective and efficient running of school operations, ensuring that policies and processes are well-considered and effective.

8. Relationship Building and School Community Engagement

  • Build and maintain positive working relationships among students, staff, and the wider school community.

  • Chair and participate in various meetings, working groups, and committees as required.

  • Foster strong links with parents and carers, working to engage them in their children’s education and wellbeing.
