Job Purpose
The University of Glasgow is seeking two exceptional Data Analysts to join our Planning, Insight and Analytics team. Key Responsibilities
As a Data Analyst at the University of Glasgow, your role will include a variety of exciting duties and opportunities to make a significant impact. Below are the core responsibilities of the position:
1. Data-Driven Insight and Analysis
- Deliver statistically robust analysis in key areas including learning and teaching metrics, student progression (continuation and graduation), research quality, and grant awards.
- Provide critical insight to help understand and improve the student experience, research performance, and operational aspects across the university.
2. Reporting and Governance Support
- Support the University’s governance and management structures by generating reports and insights for key committees. This will help inform decision-making at the highest levels.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to improve understanding of the University’s strategic initiatives and operational challenges.
3. Subject Matter Expertise
- Act as the subject matter expert on key dimensions of analysis, such as league tables, equality and diversity monitoring, and other important metrics within the University.
4. Data Storytelling and Communication
- Transform complex data into engaging, actionable stories for different audiences, from senior management to department staff.
- Ensure that data is communicated effectively, highlighting trends, key messages, and areas of focus to facilitate informed decision-making.
5. Collaborative Engagement
- Work closely with colleagues across the Planning, Insight, and Analytics team to leverage technology and data tools for presenting insights.
- Engage with external groups, conferences, and seminars to stay updated on higher education developments and share best practices.
6. Strategic Direction Contribution
- Help shape the strategic direction of the Planning, Insight, and Analytics function, contributing to innovative solutions to address evolving challenges in higher education.
Essential Qualifications and Skills
The ideal candidate will have a combination of technical expertise, data analysis skills, and the ability to effectively communicate insights. Below are the qualifications, skills, and experience required for this role:
Qualifications
- Degree-level education or equivalent professional training in a relevant field (e.g., data science, statistics, economics).
- Knowledge of analytical techniques and their application in real-world scenarios.
Skills
- Data Analysis: Strong ability to perform data analysis, identify patterns, and communicate findings through visualisation tools such as Tableau, PowerBI, or Qlik Sense.
- Statistical Proficiency: A good understanding of probability, statistical concepts, and data science methods is essential.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to process large volumes of data with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Communication: Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills. The ability to adapt communication styles for different audiences.
- Time Management: Strong ability to meet deadlines, prioritize tasks, and handle competing demands.
Experience
- Data Analysis Experience: Proven experience working with data and producing insightful analysis.
- Data Visualization Tools: Familiarity with business intelligence and data visualization software (Tableau, PowerBI, or similar).
- Experience in Higher Education (Desirable): Knowledge of higher education guidelines and university policies would be beneficial but not essential.
Desirable Experience
- Reproducible Data Science Techniques: Experience with SQL, Python, or R for data analysis and working collaboratively with data science teams.
- Higher Education Experience: Previous work in a higher education setting or with academic data analysis is advantageous.
