Job Summary

University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) is seeking a talented and self-motivated Contracts Manager to join their Research and Development (R&D) team. This role will focus on providing legal advice, preparing, and managing agreements related to biomedical research, including commercial research.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional organizational skills, a strong understanding of research management and governance, and the ability to communicate effectively with senior staff, clinicians, and external stakeholders. Key Responsibilities

1. Contract Negotiation and Management

  • Negotiating and agreeing on contractual and financial terms (including liability and intellectual property clauses) for both commercial and non-commercial contracts.
  • Collaborating with senior research staff, pharmaceutical companies, and Contract Research Organizations (CROs) to ensure all contractual obligations are met.

2. Research Governance and Risk Management

  • Identifying the appropriate contract type for new and existing projects.
  • Minimizing potential liabilities for the Trust under research and development-related contracts.
  • Ensuring that Principal Investigators (PIs) and Chief Investigators (CIs) understand their responsibilities, including relevant contractual and financial terms.

3. Database and Confidentiality Maintenance

  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records in the contract database, ensuring confidentiality agreements are upheld at all times.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Knowledge and Qualifications

  • Essential: First degree, legal qualification, or substantial experience in legal procedures and contracts.
  • Desirable: Postgraduate qualification or knowledge of research regulations (Medicines for Human Use, Data Protection, Human Tissue Act).

Experience

  • Essential: Demonstrated experience working with research contracts and knowledge of relevant regulations such as the Clinical Trials Regulations and Research Governance Framework.
  • Desirable: Experience in project management (3+ years).

Skills and Abilities

  • Essential:

    • Strong negotiation skills.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities, capable of translating complex legal and technical information to various stakeholders.
    • Good organizational and analytical skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Desirable: Ability to manage diverse research and contract requirements, including understanding intellectual property.
