About the Role

The University of Sussex is seeking a Commercial Contracts Manager to join the dynamic Contracts team within the Research and Enterprise Services Division. This position provides an exciting opportunity to contribute to the university’s research, innovation, and knowledge exchange initiatives, focusing on industry-sponsored research activity.

As a Commercial Contracts Manager, you will be responsible for managing contracts related to interdisciplinary grant-funded and industry-focused research projects. You will support the Innovation and Business Partnership team, as well as work closely with research development business partners and researchers. This includes providing contract support, offering advice on contractual risks, and liaising with external stakeholders such as funders and project partners. You will also attend project progress meetings when required.

Your role will be central to helping the University of Sussex achieve its research and business goals, ensuring that projects run smoothly and meet their commercial and legal obligations. You will provide clear and practical advice to stakeholders, while managing complex contracts in a fast-paced environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Contract Management: Draft, review, and negotiate industry-sponsored research and commercial contracts, including multi-party consortium agreements.

  • Risk Assessment: Identify, assess, and provide advice on relevant contractual risks, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.

  • Stakeholder Liaison: Work closely with researchers, project partners, funders, and business development teams to ensure smooth contract execution.

  • Advisory Role: Provide guidance to internal stakeholders on intellectual property rights, contract law, export controls, and data protection regulations.

  • Project Support: Attend project meetings, monitor contract milestones, and ensure adherence to contractual terms.

  • Documentation & Compliance: Maintain detailed records of contract negotiations, communications, and compliance checks.


About You

We are looking for a proactive, organized, and detail-oriented individual with the following qualifications and skills:

Essential Qualifications

  • A degree-level qualification or equivalent experience in a relevant field, ideally with experience in the Higher Education sector, industry, or legal profession.

  • A strong background in reviewing, drafting, and negotiating commercial contracts, particularly within the research and innovation sectors.

  • A solid understanding of intellectual property rights, contract law, export control regulations, and data protection laws.

  • Proven track record of contract management and the ability to manage multiple clients and projects simultaneously.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with stakeholders at all levels.

  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience in research-centered environments, such as research institutions, universities, or industry-related research projects.

  • Knowledge of contract law and regulations specific to the UK Higher Education sector.

  • Familiarity with funding models and grant agreements related to research and innovation.
