Job Summary

Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is excited to offer an opportunity to join our Facilities Team as a Chef at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr. This role offers a great chance to work in a dynamic environment, producing nutritious and high-quality meals for patients, staff, and visitors.

As part of this role, you’ll contribute to patient satisfaction and well-being by delivering specialized dietary requirements and overseeing food safety and quality standards.

You will work 30 hours a week, with a mix of shifts, including weekends every third week. Join us in providing excellent food services in an NHS Trust that truly values its employees.

Key Responsibilities

Catering Management and Supervision

  • Plan and manage the work schedules and resource requirements for the catering team.
  • Oversee the production of meals, snacks, salads, and sandwiches for patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Supervise catering assistants, ensuring food preparation and service adhere to quality standards.
  • Coordinate with dietitians and nursing staff to deliver specialized dietary needs in accordance with prescribed menus.

Food Safety and Quality Control

  • Maintain food safety and health and safety standards, ensuring compliance with regulations and best practices.
  • Monitor food temperatures during production and service to ensure safe consumption.
  • Regularly audit food preparation processes to ensure the highest levels of hygiene and quality.

Operational Duties

  • Work with the Operational Services Managers to implement efficient food service operations.
  • Ensure the smooth delivery of food services, including during unsociable hours, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Manage the stock control of food and kitchen supplies, ensuring waste reduction and cost control.

Qualifications and Requirements

Essential Qualifications:

  • Vocational Level 3 qualification in catering or equivalent, such as City and Guilds 7061 & 7062 or NVQ Level 2 in Professional Cookery.
  • Level 2 Food Safety qualification.
  • Allergen Awareness training and knowledge of Natasha’s Law and NHS Food and Hydration Standards.
  • Knowledge of special diets and the ability to adjust menus accordingly.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Level 3 or 4 Food Safety training.
  • NVQ Level 3 Advanced Professional Cookery.
  • Allergen Level 3 qualification.

Essential Experience:

  • Proven experience working as a chef in large-scale food production.
  • Working knowledge of HACCP principles (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points).
  • Experience managing or supervising teams in a busy kitchen environment.

Skills and Attributes:

  • Ability to lead and motivate a team, ensuring a positive working environment.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise tasks effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, ensuring timely and high-quality food service.
  • Basic computer skills to assist with administrative duties and training.

Desirable Skills:

  • Welsh Language skills at levels 1 to 5 in speaking, reading, and writing.
