Public Health Wales NHS Trust is offering an exciting opportunity for a Health Care Support Worker to join its Diabetic Eye Screening Wales (DESW) team in South Wales. This role is ideal for compassionate professionals looking to make a difference by preventing vision loss caused by diabetic retinopathy.

As a Retinal Photographer, you will deliver specialized screening services, ensuring early detection of eye diseases. The role requires frequent travel between clinic locations and occasional overnight stays. Candidates must hold a full UK driving license and be comfortable operating a Light Goods Vehicle (LGV) to transport screening equipment.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care & Screening Duties

  • Guide patients through diabetic eye screening appointments.
  • Administer eye drops and ensure proper pupil dilation before screening.
  • Capture high-quality digital retinal images using specialized equipment.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and adhere to strict confidentiality protocols.
  • Provide patients with clear explanations of screening procedures.
  • Offer reassurance and compassionate care to patients during appointments.
  • Identify any immediate concerns and escalate to senior screening staff.

Operational & Technical Tasks

  • Drive the Trust’s Light Goods Vehicle (LGV) to clinic sites across South Wales and Powys.
  • Set up and transport screening equipment as required.
  • Ensure all medical equipment is calibrated and functioning correctly.
  • Adhere to DESW protocols and NHS standard operating procedures.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Assist in quality assurance activities to maintain high screening standards.

Training & Development

  • Work towards obtaining a Retinal Screening Diploma.
  • Attend professional development and NHS training programs.
  • Participate in clinical research projects aimed at improving diabetic eye screening.
  • Stay updated with latest advancements in ophthalmic imaging.

Required Qualifications & Experience

Essential Criteria:

  • Educational Background: GCSEs (English and Maths preferred), Level 2 NVQ, or equivalent qualifications.
  • Health & Social Care Experience: Prior patient-facing or healthcare experience.
  • Technical Skills: Computer literacy, familiarity with digital imaging software.
  • Driving Requirement: Full UK driving license (LGV experience preferred).
  • Commitment to Training: Willingness to complete a Retinal Screening Diploma.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in ophthalmology, photography, or screening services.
  • Knowledge of diabetic eye disease, anatomy, and medical imaging.
  • Awareness of manual handling guidelines and infection control.
  • Understanding of NHS data security and patient confidentiality policies.
