Overview

The Sir James McNeill Postgraduate Research Scholarship (SJMN), funded by a private trust in memory of Sir James McNeill, is a prestigious award available to support a graduate research student at Monash University. It is aimed at research that is both environmentally responsible and socially beneficial.

Location: Australia

Application Deadline: 31 October each year

Total Scholarship Value: $50,291 p.a (2024 rate)

Number Offered: One every two years (from R4/2024 onwards)

Eligibility

You must be one of the following:

  • Australian citizen
  • New Zealand citizen
  • Australian permanent resident
  • Australian humanitarian visa holder
  • International student

Criteria:

  • Submitted a scholarship application in the year it is offered
  • Undertaking environmentally responsible and socially beneficial research
  • Meeting Monash’s competitive scholarship selection process requirements
  • Meeting Monash English language proficiency requirements

Note: This scholarship is also available to students undertaking Joint Research Awards when Monash University is the home institution.

Selection Criteria

Monash scholarships are highly competitive and are awarded based on:

  • Academic record
  • Research outputs
  • Prior research experience

Note: The standard RTP Scholarships terms and conditions apply, with exceptions outlined in the eligibility criteria above. This scholarship is open to research within the faculties of:

  • Arts (School of Music only)
  • Engineering
  • Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences
  • Science

Application Process

Application for graduate research scholarships is done at the time of applying for your course, unless already enrolled. A single application is used for both admission and scholarship consideration.

Note: This scholarship is awarded in the 31 October scholarship round only and is offered once every two years from R4/2024. Eligible applicants from Rounds 1 through to 4 (of the same year in which the scholarship is offered) will automatically be considered for nomination by the relevant faculty.
